MSSNY Applauds Senate Confirmation of Mary Bassett, MD, MPH as NYS Department of Health Commissioner

“We are pleased that the New York State Senate on Thursday confirmed Gov. Kathy Hochul’s choice of Dr. Mary Bassett as New York State’s new Health Commissioner. Our member physicians are eager to work closely with Dr. Bassett and her team to make accessible, affordable, quality, physician-led health care a reality for all New Yorkers, with a focus on improving diversity, equity and inclusion for the healthcare profession and underserved communities.

The New York State Department of Health is reminding New Yorkers that the overuse and misuse of antibiotics are key factors leading to antibiotic resistance. So, while it is tempting to ask a health care provider for antibiotics to treat cold, flu, and other viral illness, it is best to leave such decisions to your provider, as antibiotics only work on bacterial infections.
